Solar PV Systems to Increase Access to Electricity Services in Ghana

Overview

Ghana has made significant strides in expanding electricity access, however, poor rural households still face challenges in connecting to the electrical grid. GPOBA sought to address this disparity and increase electricity access via solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to poor households in remote regions of Ghana. In these areas, PV systems offer a low-cost technology and an immediate option for electrical access, whereas grid service would not have arrived for at least another ten years. The project provided subsidies for solar PV using private dealers for the sale, installation, and after-sale service.
